Produktivität und Lohnstückkosten im internationalen Vergleich

Abstract

Das Verarbeitende Gewerbe Westdeutschlands hat nach Norwegen, Großbritannien und Italien das vierthöchste Lohnstückkosten-Niveau der Industrieländer zu verkraften. Die vergleichsweise hohe Produktivität reicht der westdeutschen Industrie nicht aus, um den heimischen Arbeitskostendruck aufzufangen. Dieser Befund gilt, obwohl die Lohnstückkostenentwicklung seit 1996 hierzulande deutlich wettbewerbspfleglicher ist als zuvor. Seitdem sind die Lohnstückkosten insgesamt um 8 Prozent gesunken. Dies sorgte mit dafür, dass der Kostenschub aus der ersten Hälfte der 90er-Jahre wieder ausgeglichen wurde. Denn zwischen 1989 und 1996 stiegen die Lohnstückkosten der Konkurrenz 23 Prozent langsamer als in Westdeutschland. Inzwischen ist die Lohnstückkostenposition der westdeutschen Industrie wieder etwas besser als am Ende der 80er-Jahre. Hierbei hatten allerdings Wechselkurseinflüsse erheblichen Anteil.
