Abstract

One response of UK SME sector firms to the competitive threat of the European Single Market is to enhance product performance through product improvement and/or new product development projects. A survey of South West SME firms reveals only a minority had successfully implemented product performance improvement projects. A comparison of successful and unsuccessful programmes confirms the key influence of factors such as acccurate market research, project planning, adequate financial resources and effect internal management systems. Possible actions including Government involvement in building awareness for the importance of innovation in the post-1992 business environment and actions to stimulate greater use of external advisors in areas such as technology transfer are discussed.
