Abstract

The aim of this study is to measure the semantic-perceptual components of environmental quality. To this end, we, using the Cochran formula, selected 343 residents from the Qatâr-chyân neighborhood of Sanandaj, Iran. After devising a questionnaire, which includes queries relating to identity, sense of place, legibility, and safety indicators, and 23 other sub-indicators, we employed this questionnaire in the data collection. Making use of an independent-sample t-test, we also specified the status of environmental quality in the neighborhood. In order to compare peoples’ opinions in terms of demographic variables and examine the relationship between these demographic variables and 22 semantic-perceptual sub-indicators, a one-way ANOVA and a Spearman ordinal correlation were used, respectively. The results indicated that although the environmental quality of the Qatâr-chyân neighborhood was significantly high (5>3.08>1), the functional, semantic-perceptual, and aesthetic components were actually significantly higher. In terms of the semantic-perceptual indicators, identity, sense of place, and legibility were all significantly higher than the mean, while safety was significantly lower. There also existed significant differences with respect to the demographic variables.
