Targeted poverty alleviation in China: Evidence from Jingdong e‐commerce poverty alleviation

Abstract

Inequalities within and between countries continue to grow as a result of globalization. Although traditional anti‐poverty efforts from governments and NGOs have had their respective successes, poverty continues to exist in every country, particularly in rural areas where there are fewer resources to support socioeconomic development. Private enterprises may use their strengths, including market knowledge and accessibility to various resources, to develop innovative business models that can provide viable and effective solutions to social problems such as poverty. This article examines a case study of a poverty alleviation initiative by Jingdong (JD). The results indicate that JD utilizes industrial poverty alleviation to empower local enterprises. Through the use of education and training, finance, and employment support, JD builds an ecosystem that provides local enterprises high‐quality employees and reliable logistics with which to conduct business. As a result, the JD model enables local enterprises to compensate farmers with sufficient wages that can reduce poverty and improve their well‐being, creating a mutually beneficial solution for all stakeholders. The findings demonstrate the potential of a private enterprise to reduce poverty in a way that might not be otherwise independently achieved by government and NGOs. 国家内部和国与国之间的不平等在全球化的作用下继续增长。尽管政府和非政府组织(NGOs)的传统减贫措施各自取得了成功,但每个国家仍然存在贫困,尤其在用于支持社会经济发展的资源更少的农村地区。私人企业能使用各自优势,包括市场知识和对不同资源的可获取性,发展创新商业模式,为贫困等社会问题提供可行有效的解决方案。本文将京东(JD)发起的减贫倡议作为案例研究展开分析。结果表明,京东通过产业减贫为地方企业赋权。通过使用教育和培训、金融、以及就业支持,京东建立了一个为地方企业提供高质量员工和可靠物流的生态系统。结果则是,京东模式让地方企业能够补偿农民足够用于减贫并提高福祉的薪水,为所有利益攸关方创造一个相互受益的解决方案。研究结果证明了一个私人企业在减贫方面的潜能,这种潜能是政府和非政府组织无法独立完成的。 Las desigualdades dentro y entre países continúan creciendo como resultado de la globalización. Aunque los esfuerzos tradicionales contra la pobreza de los gobiernos y las ONG han tenido sus respectivos éxitos, la pobreza continúa existiendo en todos los países, particularmente en las áreas rurales donde hay menos recursos para apoyar el desarrollo socioeconómico. Las empresas privadas pueden utilizar sus puntos fuertes, incluido el conocimiento del mercado y la accesibilidad a diversos recursos, para desarrollar modelos comerciales innovadores que puedan proporcionar soluciones viables y efectivas a problemas sociales como la pobreza. Este artículo examina un estudio de caso de una iniciativa de alivio de la pobreza de Jingdong (JD). Los resultados indican que JD utiliza el alivio de la pobreza industrial para empoderar a las empresas locales. Mediante el uso de educación y capacitación, apoyo financiero y laboral, JD construye un ecosistema que brinda a las empresas locales empleados de alta calidad y una logística confiable con la que realizar negocios. Como resultado, el modelo JD permite a las empresas locales compensar a los agricultores con salarios suficientes que pueden reducir la pobreza y mejorar su bienestar, creando una solución de beneficio mutuo para todas las partes interesadas. Los hallazgos demuestran el potencial de una empresa privada para reducir la pobreza de una manera que, de otra manera, el gobierno y las ONG no podrían lograr de manera independiente.
