Radiocarbon dating and postglacial evolution, upper Valtellina and Livignese area (Sondrio, Central Italian Alps)

Abstract

A geomorphologic survey of the upper Valtellina was undertaken to identify the occurrence of permafrost and to establish its relationships with the Late Glacial and Postglacial history of the Livigno area. In addition, several peaty soils buried by rock glaciers were submitted to 14C dating. Among the measured ages, spanning the Postglacial period from c. 6190 to 580 a BP, those relative to (a) the upper Foppa valley and (b) Vallaccia of Foscagno were of particular concern. Radiometric dating indicates that the active rock glacier La Foppa I has been expanding at least since 1120 a BP whereas its inactive analogue La Foppa II, in expansion at c. 5000 a BP, was the only one to form during early Holocene times. At Foscagno valley, 14C ages indicate that the front of the inactive rock glacier buried a Late Glacial moraine at least 2700 a BP and data for a nearby active rock glacier suggest that its expansion dates back at least to 2200 a BP. At the same site the lower level of a peat bog located between bedrock and the morainic ridge of the Late Glacial glacier of Foscagno valley yielded an age of 6190 a BP. Because of its stratigraphic position the peat level provides a reasonably sound age for assigning the moraine to the Egesen I stadial. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Une recherche géomorphologique dans le Valtellina supérieur a été enterprise pour reconnaître la présence de pergélisols et pour établir ses relations avec l'histoire tardi‐ et post‐glaciaire de la région de Livigno. En outre, plusieurs sols tourbeux enterrés par des glaciers rocheux ont été datés par 14C. Parmi les âges mesurés se rapportant à la période post‐glaciaire couvrant environ 6190 à 580 ans B.P., ceux qui se rapportent à la vallée supérieure de la Foppa et à la Vallacia de Foscagno présentent un intérêt particulier. Les datations indiquent en effet que le glacier rocheux de la Foppa I était en expansion depuis au moins 1120 ans B.P., tandis que celui de la Foppa II s'est développé il y a environ 5000 ans B.P. Ce dernier a été le seul à se former pendant le début de l'Holocène. Dans la vallée de Focagno, les datations 14C indiquent que le front du glacier rocheux a enterré une moraine tardiglaciaire, il y a au moins 2700 ans. Des données d'un autre glacier rocheux proche suggèrent que son expansion remonte à au moins 2200 ans. Dans le même site, le niveau inférieur d'un marais tourbeux situé entre la roche en place et une ride morainique du glacier tardiglaciaire de la vallée de Foscagno a donné un âge de 6190 ans B.P. A cause de sa position stratigraphique, la datation du niveau de tourbe permet d'attribuer raisonnablement à cette moraine au stade d'Egesen I. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
