Topographic and drainage control on Weichselian ice‐wedge and sand‐wedge formation, Vennebrügge, German–Dutch border

Abstract

The climatic conditions under which ice‐ and sand wedges are formed have been debated for many years. The temperature and humidity conditions controlling their formation have been studied in the present‐day Arctic. The results have been used to derive the palaeo‐environmental and climatic conditions associated with the occurrence of ice‐wedge casts and relict sand wedges in sedimentary sequences. In this paper a well‐developed polygonal pattern of ice‐wedge casts and relict sand wedges dating from the Weichselian Last Glacial Maximum is described. It has been found at the surface of a late Saalian sandur deposit close to the border of western Germany and the eastern Netherlands. The ice‐wedge casts are present at the lower end of the sandur and probably formed in relatively humid conditions, while the relict sand wedges are exclusively present in the higher part of the sandur with drier conditions. Since both wedge types may have formed simultaneously, it is concluded that climatic differences are not the only factor controlling their formation. Local differences in soil humidity, land surface instability and related aeolian sand transport have determined their infilling with either sand or ice. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Les conditions climatiques sous lesquelles les fentes de gel à remplissage de glace et de sable apparaissent sont débattues depuis de nombreuses années. Les conditions de température et d'humidité contrôlant leur formation ont été étudiées dans l'Arctique et les résultats recueillis ont été utilisés pour définir les conditions climatiques et paléoenvironnementales associées avec les moulages de fentes de gel à remplissage de glace et celles liées aux fentes de gel à remplissage de sables. Dans le présent article, les auteurs décrivent un réseau polygonal de moulages de fentes de gel à remplissage de glace et de fentes à remplissage primaire de sables apparu lors du maximum du froid de la dernière glaciation. Il a été observé à la surface d'un dépôt d'outwash de la fin du Saale prés de la frontière de l'Allemagne et des Pays‐Bas. Les moulages de coins de glace sont présents à la partie inférieure du sandur et ont probablement été formés dans des conditions relativement humides, tandis que les fentes de gel à remplissage de sable sont uniquement localisées dans des parties plus élevées où les conditions étaient plus sèches. Comme les deux types de fentes ont été formés en même temps, on peut conclure que les différences climatiques ne sont pas le seul facteur contrôlant leur formation. Des différences locales dans l'humidité du sol, l'instabilité de la surface et le transport de sables ont déterminé que le remplissage des fentes de gel ait été formé soit de glace, soit de sables. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
