Genesis of massive ice at ‘Ice Mountain’, Yenesei River, Western Siberia, according to results of gas analyses

Abstract

Analyses of the gas composition of bubbles in the massive ice at Ice Mountain, made for the first time, enable one to conclude that the origin of ice is glacial. O2, H2, CO2, N2, He and CH4 were determined. Our genetic proof is based on the principally different bio‐ and chemical gas contents in intrasedimental and surface ice. That is why we also deduce the data on the ice of clear genesis: modern glaciers and injection ice. Gas composition seems to be an important criterion of ice genesis and this method should be applied to other massive ice bodies of unknown origin. Des analyses de la composition des bulles de gaz comprises dans les glaces massives de la 'Ice Mountain' ont été faites pour la première fois et permettent d'apporter des arguments en faveur d'une origine glaciaire de cette glace. O2, H2, CO2, N2, He et CH4 ont été mesurés. L'argument génétique est basé sur les compositions différentes des gaz dans les glaces de surface et intersedimentaires. Les résultats indiquent une genèse claire: à savoir de la glace de glacier et d'injection. La composition des gaz paraǐt constituer un élément important permettant de reconnaǐtre la genèse des glaces et cette méthode devrait être appliquée à d'autres glaces massives d'origine inconnue.
