Some factors that affect the overhaul cost of ships: An exercise in statistical cost analysis

Abstract

Cross sectional data on 85 U.S. Atlantic Fleet warships is collected and analyzed. Multivariate statistical techniques are employed in an attempt to relate thorough overhaul repair expenditures to factors such as age, size, complexity, power plant, and usage level. Several variables are found to be statistically significant and quantitatively important. Parameter estimates, measures of statistical and predictive importance for individual variables, and examples of the model's use are included.
