Point process analysis for Italian seismic activity

Abstract

Several point process models are considered for describing the occurrence times of earthquakes in different seismic regions in Italy. Clustering effects due to aftershocks, the influence of magnitude and of sudden stress release are investigated. Parameters are estimated by means of likelihood methods, while the Akaike information criterion is used to compare models. The goodness of the estimated models is then tested through analysis of the residual processes.
