Editorial: Zur Erweiterung der EU

Abstract

Am 1. Mai 2004 wird die Europäische Union um zehn Mitgliedsländer erweitert. Wäre das Wort nicht so abgegriffen, würde man nicht zögern, dieses Datum als historisch bezeichnen. Die Erweiterung 2004 schafft einen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Raum, den es in diesem Umfang in der Geschichte nicht gegeben hat. Die Bevölkerungszahl der EU wächst um 75 auf fast 460 Mio. Die ziemlich hermetische Trennung Europas in West und Ost, die im Gefolge des Zweiten Weltkriegs eintrat, wird überwunden. Für Österreich bedeutet die Erweiterung in wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht die weitgehende Wiederherstellung von Binnenmarktverhältnissen, die bis 1918 gegeben waren. Dies ist eine einzigartige Chance für die österreichische Volkswirtschaft.
