Greenhouse gas emissions, environmental patents and spillover effects in Italian provinces

Abstract

This study analyzes the geographical distribution of CO2 emissions and knowledge spillovers in relation to spatial concentration of green patents, using a balanced panel of 475 observations in 95 Italian provinces from 1990 to 2010. The North holds higher levels of emissions and green patents, while the Center shows the lowest emissions. The positive and robust correlation between spillovers and green patent stock suggests that eco-innovation is influenced by green patents from near provinces. The higher correlation coefficient in Northeast Italy adds original empirical evidence regarding the spatial concentration of green patents. CO2 emissions and emission intensity (CO2/VA) are negatively correlated with knowledge spillovers, which influence a province’s environmental innovation and performances.
