Abstract

The devaluation of the currency and the changes in relative prices provided a good environment for the manufacturing industry, especially the steel industry, to grow at above-average rates during the postconvertibility regime. In this context, the aim of the paper is to analyze the ruptures and continuities that the steel sector exhibits between the convertibility and postconvertibility regimes focusing on the main characteristics of the production process, the role of the sector in manufacturing growth, the relation with external markets and the steel's evolution of productivity, employment, wages and profitability. Finally we will address the main challenges facing the sector in order to consolidate the current development process
