The industrialization of Venezuela

Abstract

En este estudio histórico cualitativo (escrito en 1992) se reseñan los pasos del desarrollo industrial venezolano entre 1920 y 1992, según los diferentes sectores, relacionándolos con los cambios en la renta petrolera y en la configuración socio-política del Estado. La distribución de la renta petrolera fue determinada por la estructura social-política, favoreciendo al capital comercial-bancario tradicional en relación con la clase política de funcionarios del Estado, y usó los métodos de la sobrevaluación, de los créditos generosos a empresarios, y de la corrupción. La ideología correspondiente era la de “sembrar el petróleo”. La reducción de la renta y el endeudamiento externo, unidos con la pérdida de la capacidad orientadora del Estado desde los años 80, debilitaron el desarrollo industrial, dejándolo sin perspectivas positivas.
