The Venezuelan economy, some aspects of its adjustment economic program

Abstract

Durante varios años, el país aparentó una bonanza económica de bases muy frágiles. La pésima administración de los recursos, la corrupción y la desidia, aceleraron la crisis ante el compromiso de la deuda externa y la inestabilidad de los ingresos petroleros. Ante tales circunstancias, el gobierno que se inició en 1989 implantó un programa de ajustes económicos. Programa este necesario, difícil y doloroso. Al inicio del nuevo período presidencial los indicadores económicos mostraron un grave retroceso en el PIB, aumento del desempleo e incremento acelerado en el nivel general de los precios. Es así como se agravan los problemas de pobreza, con su secuela de desnutrición, menor acceso al estudio, a la salud, a la vivienda y una mayor violencia social. Aún en 1990, los indicadores no muestran el esperado lanzamiento de la economía. Se espera que en 1991 con el fuerte empuje del Plan de Inversiones y la ley de Política Habitacional, retrasos en su implementación, se imprima a la actividad productiva una tendencia creciente. Al mismo tiempo deberá evaluarse la política social con el fin de hacerla más eficiente y con ello mejorar la calidad de vida de la población.
