El empleo en una economía deprimida. Análisis econométrico de sus determinantes en la industria chilena, 1974-1978

Abstract

El propósito de este trabajo es analizar los determinantes del empleo en una economía deprimida, en particular, en el sector industrial de la economía chilena durante el período 1974-1978. Se someten a verificación empírica dos hipótesis alternativas: la primera, que la evolución del empleo industrial está explicada por el curso de los salarios reales y la productividad del trabajo; la segunda, que en condiciones de exceso de oferta de bienes, la caída del empleo está determinada por la baja en el nivel de actividad económica y la demanda por mano de obra es independiente de su costo. Los resultados permiten rechazar la primera alternativa, y no así la segunda hipótesis. Finalmente, las implicaciones de política de este análisis, sugieren actuar sobre la demanda agregada para expandir el empleo, en una economía deprimida, y advierten sobre la ineficiencia de medidas que actúen sobre el costo de la mano de obra.
