Nota técnica 1: Sobre las soluciones al problema de duración

Abstract

El problema de duración se refiere al momento óptimo de cortar los árboles que han estado creciendo por años, el que es metodológicamente parecido al de cuánto añejar el vino o en qué edad vender los conejos. Este es un clásico problema de evaluación de proyectos que pareciera haberse olvidado. En efecto, el Reporte de la Comisión Sobre la Enseñanza de la Economía en los EE.UU. (1991), de la Sociedad de Economistas Norteamericanos, señala, en su página 1.044. “…Un miembro de la Comisión notó que los estudiantes brillantes (de programas para graduados) que no tenían dificultad para comprender argumentos matemáticos complejos titubeaban al preguntarles sobre cuestiones estándar de microeconomía de pregrado – tal como cuándo cortar los árboles”. En esta Nota Técnica se revisa el problema de duración y, sin intentar ser original, véase Labbé (1985), se discute sobre las soluciones clásicas y sus diferencias, más una explicación de cómo compatibilizar la intuición con resultados formales.
