El saldo de la balanza de pagos y la inflación como medios de solución de los desequilibrios monetarios: Chile 1950-1970

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza un caso intermedio entre las economías abierta y cerrada presentadas en los textos, considerándose a la inflación y a la balanza de pagos como variables que simultáneamente responden al desequilibrio monetario. El modelo que se construye es una variante del enfoque monetario sujeta a presupuestos menos restrictivos, su estimación se realiza por el método de variables instrumentales aunque se incluyen resultados obtenidos por máxima verosimilitud. Los resultados llevan a concluir que la balanza de pagos responde al proceso de ajuste del mercado monetario, que la inflación doméstica no es determinada por la inflación de paridad y que el cambio en los precios es el mecanismo más expedito para ajustar los saldos monetarios a nivel deseado.
