Abstract

Este trabajo analiza el proceso de convergencia real de las economías de la Unión Europea ampliada en el periodo 1995 a 2009. A partir del PIB per cápita, se comprueba que se han producido avances importantes en la convergencia de tipo beta que, no obstante, no han sido homogéneos entre países, ni a lo largo del horizonte temporal contemplado. Parte de la convergencia se ha debido al efecto estadístico producido por el hecho de que las grandes economías han crecido débilmente, así como a los flujos migratorios desde el este al oeste de la Unión. En los dos últimos años (2008-09) la convergencia se ha detenido, o incluso revertido, aunque esta dinámica empieza a manifestarse antes del comienzo de la recesión. La continuidad del proceso de convergencia depende actualmente de los mismos factores que están entorpeciendo la recuperación económica.
