Abstract

Abstract - The purpose of this paper is to study how export-platform FDI influences the local industrial production. The impacts of this investment are seen through the competition effect and technological spillovers. The analytical model suggested has conditional results. This type of investment can lead to net exits of domestic firms as well as to a decrease in their size, which is the case when there is a significant technological gap between domestic and foreign firms. Conversely, this type of investment can also be considered as a catalyst for the development of local industries when it flows into sectors where few domestic firms are present. In the case of Vietnamese export-oriented indus-tries, export-platform FDI leads to a sharp increase in local industrial pro-duction through a net entry of domestic firms and an increase in their size.
