Abstract

This paper examines the evolution of the geographical distribution of foreign direct investments (FDIs) in China during its opening process. We measure the concentration degree of FDIs at different geographical levels. At the inter-provincial level, we find that the concentration degree of FDIs decreased significantly from 1986 to 1994, and then became stable after 1994. Besides, most of the provinces whose FDI share has increased during the process are coastal ones. The remote peripheral regions have gained very little from the gradual opening of the economy. At the intra-provincial level, our results indicate that the early-opened provinces are more likely to experience an internal dispersion of FDI.
