Abstract

Transylvania is a historical, cultural, political, and economic region inside of Carpathian Mountains, Romania, covers, from administrative point of view, ten counties that are part of three different development regions: Alba, Mures, Harghita, Sibiu, Brasov, Covasna - which form the Central Region; Cluj, Salaj, Bistrita-Năsăud - which are part of the North-West Region and Hunedoara - which is part of the Western Region. This paper presents the main aspects of Transylvanian economy, focusing especially on industry and agriculture. Using data gathered from official statistic sites, we characterized the economy through GDP value, GDP p.c. and their place in Romania and Europe, GDP's structure by activities and other specific indices for industry and agriculture. The discrepancies in the economic development of the ten counties are large, so while the central and southern counties (Cluj, Mures, Brasov, Sibiu) are industrialized and economically more stable than the other counties, in the last ones developments in recent years has resulted in loss of competitive ability and competitive advantages in several branches. Polycentric territorial development, the existence of business support infrastructure relatively well developed and functional specialization given by sectors, which proven economic performance, can help in attracting the investments to the potential of indigenous resources.
