Radiation enhancement for a triband microstrip antenna using an AMC reflector characterized with three zero-phases in reflection coefficient

Abstract

A compact tricyclic nested triband microstrip antenna is designed in this paper, which is composed of three metal rectangular rings, an input feed line, and an elliptic-shaped defected ground structure (DGS). To enhance the antenna's radiation performance, a novel artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) reflector characterized with three zero-phases in the reflection coefficient at 2.4, 4.2 and 5.8 GHz is proposed, which mainly consists of complementary split ring resonators (CSRR). The measured S-parameters and radiation patterns agree well with the simulated data. The antenna's three impedance bandwidths span in the ranges of 2.22-2.49, 2.94-4.96, and 5.41-6.62 GHz, respectively, which effectively cover all the 2.4/5.2/5.8-GHz WLAN frequency bands and the 2.5/3.5/5.5-GHz WiMAX bands. Particularly, by adding the designed AMC reflector, the measured antenna gains at the frequency points of 2.4, 2.5, 3.5, 5.5 and 5.8 GHz have been improved with 4.22, 4.42, 1.99, 6.44 and 3.46 dB, respectively.
