Abstract

The depth of penetration of electromagnetic (EM) waves in modified 1-D isotropic medium due to a horizontal electric dipole situated in isotropic region is investigated. The analytical expressions for EM fields in the modified 1-D isotropic medium are given, the expressions are more complex than the isotropic case, but can be reduced to the corresponding isotropic results and proved to satisfy the boundary conditions. In order to obtain insight into the path taken by the wave and the depth of penetration, the properties of the locus of the Poynting vectors are studied. The results are useful to study the geophysical prospecting in modified 1-D isotropic earth or sediments. According to the differences between the depth penetration of EM waves of the electric and magnetic types, conductivities of the earth lithosphere can be determined approximately.
