Abstract

The Northern Powerhouse: a commentary. Regional Studies. The Northern Powerhouse is a programme intended to improve the economic position of the North of England, primarily by means of a large-scale investment in transport infrastructure. Consideration is given to various definitions of the Northern Powerhouse area and to the structure of its cities. Attention is directed to some of the underlying economic difficulties of the area. The cornerstone of the programme, which involves the renovation and extension of different modes of transport, is considered from various perspectives. Finally, the discussion focuses on the implementation of the programme and on issues that need to be taken into account.
