Abstract

This study contributes to the existing literature on corporate political activity (CPA) by providing insights into how the content of political strategies evolves over time in a multidivisional firm. The focus of this study is on examining how corporate political strategies vary across business divisions and how political strategies change over time. The influence of three contextual factors is examined: firm, industry, and institutional-environment characteristics. The empirical evidence is based on a historical single case study of a Finnish industrial conglomerate, Tampella Ltd., covering the period 1944-91. The results of the study show that not only the level but also the nature of political activity vary within a multidivisional firm over time. Moreover, I identify two generic processes through which a firm changes its political strategies. Implications for existing research are discussed, and avenues for further research are presented.
