Abstract

The 1933 University Reform was a crucial element in the transformation of the Ottoman Empire into the Republic of Turkey. The reform aimed to create an academia that was more in tune with the new regime while contributing to the scientific needs of the country. One of the most important contributions to the new university that was established during this reform came from an unexpected source: German academics who were forced out of their positions and countries by the Nazi regime. With the help of these refugee scholars, the first Faculty of Economics was established as part of the new university. This article analyzes the contributions of refugee economists and their students to the development of economic thought in Turkey.
