Possible Alternatives to the Gross Regional Product Indicator

Abstract

The paper shows the possibilities and limitations of using the gross regional product (GRP) indicator in regional research and management. The regional inclusive development index (RIDI) is proposed to assess the qualitative aspects of regional growth in the long term. The results of interregional comparisons of per capita GRP and RIDI indicators are presented. It is shown that accounting for many factors in the RIDI leads to a significant decrease in the indicators of interregional differentiation as compared with the average per capita GRP. The conclusion is substantiated that the indices characterizing the qualitative aspects of economic growth cannot replace the GRP in the development of economic policy, but they are an important complement to quantitative indicators.
