Significance of integrating probabilistic performance-based cover design in local construction guidelines for adequate serviceability of coastal built environment: Bangladesh perspective

Abstract

Degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to chloride ingress is a common environmental hazard in coastal regions. Performance-based design of cover for marine RC structures can ensure longer service life and, eventually, results in reduced rehabilitation cost of deteriorated structures. Hence, study on performance-based cover design is of significant importance for incorporating such provision within local construction practice of any region. With this end in view, an attempt has been made to measure performance-based cover requirements for marine RC structures made with 36 local concrete mixes of Bangladesh following the full probabilistic approach of fib code. The probabilistic approach was ensured by random selection of different code-specified parameters from generated population samples of each variable parameter using MATLAB functions. The sample population was generated as per recommended statistical distribution of the variable parameters. The mean, standard deviation and 95th percentile values of the obtained cover bands of each mix were determined to evaluate the statistical significance of the corresponding cover distribution. The cover values, determined using randomly selected parameters (probabilistic approach), were compared with the values obtained through deterministic approach by a previous study. It was found that recommending minimum cover values of deemed-to-satisfy guideline or mean value of the probabilistic approach or value from deterministic technique as concrete cover under marine exposure has potential of not covering a significant segment of population domain. Therefore, 95th percentile of measured cover values should be recommended for ensuring design service life of marine RC structures with adequate confidence.
