Abstract

This study determined the change in urbanization index of 10 fast urbanizing cities with population densities of more than 180 capita/km2 for the time period between 2009 and 2014. The urbanization index was estimated using information entropy weighting method using selected social, economic and spatial indicators. Findings indicate high rates of urbanization in all cities during the time period except the city of Zonguldak. Yalova and Gaziantep were identified as cities with higher rates of economic urbanization compared to other cities. High rates of urbanization during the time period 2009-2014 indicate urbanization specific issues in Turkey will increase in the future.Classification-JEL:R0.
