Abstract

The banking sector has been criticized as of emerged financial crisis, beginning in the U.S. mortgage market, affecting global economic activity adversely. The aim of this study is to examine efficiency of commercial banks operated in the Turkish banking sector between years of 2007–2011. In accordance with this aim, data envelopment analysis (DEA), a nonparametric technique applied in efficiency analysis, based on a large number of inputs and output, of similar decision units was used. The result of the analysis both reflects general outlook of the sector and reveals that private and foreign-funded commercial banks, estimated as efficient as a result of Mann-Whitney U test, originated from the same scatter.
