Creating Public Value by Means of the Free and Open Source GNU Health Software

Abstract

The main purpose of the paper is to present the role, the potential and functionalities of the GNU Health software. This advanced and mature, high?quality product – created and continually developed under the free and open software project – is successfully deployed in healthcare institutions across many countries. It is not only a great contributor improving the medical practice management, but also plays an important role in creating public value. The first section of the paper discusses the essence of the free and open source software in the context of its definition, the social movement phenomenon, as well as the legal and licence-related issues. The next chapter contains a literature and desk-based research diagnosis of the free and open source software used in Poland. These studies reveal a cognitive gap in this category of software utilization in the country’s healthcare system. The GNU Health software potential is presented in the so-defined space.
