Abstract

This article presents a comparative analysis of the process of economic transformation in China and Russia. The author proceeds from the standpoint that comparison of the two strategies of market transition should not be reduced to debates about the advantages of the gradualist strategy over the radical strategy. The author suggests a more complex approach for the assessment of economic transition in Russia and China taking into consideration initial conditions of the two countries, certain principles of Marxist theory, and recent developments in economics. Comparative analysis is focused on three aspects: the reorganization of the state ownership system, the transformation of the role of the state in the economic process, and social security reform.
