Abstract

In February–March 2006, researchers and practitioners from over 70 countries met at a seven-day conference in Tokyo and Kyoto to evaluate Environmental Education (EE) research and practices in the Asia-Pacific region, and to explore ways of integrating EE and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The conference reflected on similarities in the evolution of EE in the region and emphasized the common need for best practice indicators. In-depth dialogue and analysis aimed at identifying key EE/ESD research themes for the Decade and linking them with practice. Presentations from participants generated eight major themes, which, among other things, brought forth the implications of a nation's political will for EE/ESD implementation, highlighted the stages of professional development of EE/ESD, and explored the power relations in ESD with an emphasis on issues of justice, equity and access. The conference provided a broader perspective for understanding ESD to aid a smooth reorientation of EE to ESD.
