Abstract

This article begins with a critique of American views regarding the declining importance of Siberian development under Gorbachev. Drawing on statements by Gorbachev, as well as planning documents and research, this article argues that increased Siberian development is both an important part of Soviet regional policy and in its national interest. The nature of this future development and spatial relationships within Siberia are also discussed.
