Abstract

To a greater degree than in other industrial nations, questions of culture and leisure time use in America are matters of personal and private choice which the state should not shape or direct. Consequently, little attention has been paid to how to conceptualize the field or to organize the available statistics and to collect information on a regular basis. The establishment of a number of public agencies with responsibilities in the field of culture, the arts, recreation, and leisure, added to the call of research scholars, highlights the need for more and better statistics organized within a comprehensive framework.
