Abstract

Unobserved economy indicates all the productive activities that are beyond the sources of the data normally used to implement National Accounts, thus compromising the comprehensiveness of GDP. This paper aims to survey the five areas that compose the unobserved economy: underground economy, criminal economy, informal economy, domestic economy and statistical underground. Underground and criminal economy represent the largest areas in terms of GDP. A correct measurement of the unobserved economy is not only a useful tool for assessing GDP, but also an important indicator of impact for policy-makers in fiscal policies and the fight against crime.
