Abstract

The harbour system occupies a major role in the European transport network. Owing to its geographical position, Italy could represent a natural hub for sea trade. Nevertheless, the Italian harbours seem to be lacking in competitiveness compared to the foreign ones. Therefore, it is necessary to modernize the system through technological innovation and a competitive reassessment of the entire sector. Adequate regulations together with the right attention to the market trends would enable the Italian harbour system to increase its efficiency. Consequently, the entire country would benefit from the opportunity of an economic revival and welfare.
