Abstract

The aim of the article is to analyze Saint-Petersburg residents’ vision of cultural and communicative barriers arising in their process of their communication with communities of labor migrants and preventing them from forming ethno tolerant mentality. The article presents the analysis of the results of the pilot sociological research of Saint-Petersburg residents’ opinion (2010–2015) the subject of which was the process of ethnization of urban area as a result of increasing pressure from labor migration. The author justifies the facts that globalization and connected with it technical progress, intensification of population mobility become forces stimulating atmosphere of inter-ethnical conflicts of different levels. The main conflict area where we can find differences in languages, habitus, gender visions, etc. is a place where residents and communities of labor migrant meet, i.e. social sphere of urban environment. In respondents’ minds there was understanding of the phenomenon of labor migration as an ambivalent social problem, which is on the one hand dangerous due to the possibility of bitter social conflicts, on the other hand – restrained by the processes of forming ethno-tolerant mentality.
