Abstract

Medical Affairs (MA) is an organizational function in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and device (biomedical) companies. Although an integral unit and mostly seen as an interface between research and development and marketing, it is not clearly defined from a scope and size perspective. As the health sector is facing increasing challenges, like limited resources, increasing competition and changing needs of health care professionals and patients, medical companies must find new ways to create and sell ethical, medical and economic efficient products. MA professionals regularly have a deep clinical and scientific knowledge as well as high analytical skills. Pharmaceutical and medical device companies should realize the big potential of putting MA into the role of a valued strategic partner who can provide scientifically sound and medically relevant support to deliver innovative, safe and effective customer solutions and introduce these to relevant stakeholders. This review points out the opportunities MA can bring for the company as well as for physicians and patients.
