Abstract

This paper analyses the influences of privatisation, competition, regulation and of organisational change on the performance of a Romanian telecommunications company – Romtelecom S.A. The case study is special as the privatisation and the introduction of competition occurred at times when Romania still had to “divest” its communist heritage. The economy was far from stable and the governance structures weak. Nevertheless, the privatisation and the introduction of competition led to performance increases. The largest increases can be attributed to the liberalisation of the market. Also, the economy and the citizens profited especially from the introduction of competition as this led to a modern telecommunications infrastructure with affordable and reliable services – although not with blanket coverage in all areas of Romania.
