Optimisation Through Rehabilitation For Water Distribution Networks

Abstract

The latest report on the operation of water supply systems in Romania, prepared by the Romanian Water Association (ARA), shows that an estimated 64% of Romania's population is supplied with water and approximately 50% of the water supplied is lost due to deficient systems. The paper presents the advantages of rehabilitation/refurbishment of the old distribution networks that are estimated to have an approximate total length of 22,000 km. Through a simple numerical example it is shown that significant savings of water and energy can be achieved (up to 70%). As such, after a detailed analysis of each network, an appropriate investment program should be developed.
