Abstract

Empirical approach to anaerobic digestion of wastewater has proved insufficient when the target was to increase process efficiency (obtained from the increasing amount of biogas output) which resulted in the need for construction, calibration and validation of mathematical models and then to be able to describe relationships between microorganisms involved in the process and provide information about the various components of plant size (volume, retention times, response speed). Mathematical models of purification, although many recognized as being extremely powerful, don't cover all aspects of treatment and are perfectible containing information incomplete exploited or even wrong addressed. Differential models (classical) are relatively simple mathematical structures, generated by various researchers, base of these models were proposed by Monod bacterial growth equations (1949), the kinetics of the order 0, 1 and 2 derived from Briggs‐Haldane equation and growth slowed of these models can be reduced to two differential equations of material balance type: one defining the circuit of organic substance in a plant and a second one on active mass, ie activated sludge, thus being called differential models. Category matrix models (STATE‐OF‐ART) includes four models and their variants made by a structure called Task Group on Mathematical Modeling for Design and Operation of Biological Wastewater Treatment Processes established in the mid‐80s by the International Water Association, in order to gather experts from all related fields cleansing: engineering, biochemistry, biomathematics and so on, and professionals associated with the working group. Models are generically called ASM(Activated Sludge Model) and a chronological number for their position: ASM No. 1, ASM No. 2, modified and improved as ASM No. 2d and No. 3, their main feature is the structuring of information in the form a table or matrix (hence the name of matrix models).
