Women Motivation And Participation In Political Development In Nigeria: Issues, Constraints And Prospects

Abstract

Development is an all-embracing concept that demands the inclusion of both men and women toward achieving political ends. The ideal of equality has insisted that men and women are politically equal and that all citizens are equally allowed to take part in political life or to run for and hold offices. Over the years, women have not been fully allowed to participate in Nigeria's politics. Thus, the eligible women who constitute about 50 percent of the total population in Nigeria are not critical players in the process of nation building. The aim of this paper is to examine the level of women's motivation and participation in Nigeria's politics with its resultant effect on the political development. The paper adopts descriptive method with secondary source of data collection. Thus, the paper makes conceptual analysis of the key ideas, factors that hinder women participation and recommends constitutional gender balancing as positive motivational measure to aid significant participation of women in political development.
