Effects Of Bio-Safety Measures And Disposal Of Medical Waste On Primary Health Care System In Karu, Abuja Municipalarea Council

This paper examined the effects of bio-safety measures and disposal of medical waste on primary health care system in Karu, Abuja Municipal Area Council. Bio-safety is aimed at the promotion of large-scale loss of biological integrity because the theme of bio-safety focuses on ecology and safety of human health and attains environmental quality. The concept of medicate waste is aimed at effective management of these waste items due to its sensitivities and hazardous nature on man and environment. The objective of study was to examine the role of management on the effects of bio-safety of medical waste on primary health care delivery in Karu, Abuja. Data for this study were obtained from both primary and secondary sources. Primary data were obtained from the administration of 150 copies of questionnaires to 3 categories of staff in Karu primary health center, Abuja while secondary data were sourced from documentary materials such as existing literature, academic journals and archival. The descriptive statistical analyses were used for this study. The results show that bio-safety measures and standards were not in placed and adhered to in Karu primary health-care center and this was attributed to poor funding on the part of government. Also, there was poor disposal of medical wastes, inadequate personnel and equipment. There is the need for better measures to be applied on bio-safety and improvement in the methods of disposal of medical wastes among others challenges. The study conclude that defaulting health-care institutions of these offences need to be sanctioned. The study recommends that there should be an increase in annual subvention to the Primary Health Care Center Kuru, Abuja as this will help project bio-safety measures and management of medical waste disposal and of the need for enlightens campaign to educate health workers on the significant of bio-safety measures in disposal of medical wastes.
