Abstract

Stress in the workplace has touched almost all professions, starting from executive levels to co-workers who are directly engaged in the production. It is of great concern to employees, employers, and psychologists because of its high growing rate in illhealth, as a result of long working hours of employees. The main objective of the study is to examine the effect of work stress on employee performance in selected deposit money banks in Lagos and Ogun States, Nigeria. Survey research design was used for the study. 400 copies of questionnaire were administered to workers of banks in Lagos and Ogun States. Data was collected through the use of questionnaire. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the respondents' bio-data while multiple regression analysis was used to test the hypotheses formulated. Findings of the study reveal that all the independent variables (workload induced stress, pressure induced stress, target induced stress, and work family conflict)had no significant effect on each of the dependent variables(service quality, sales turnover, and customer satisfaction) in selected deposit money banks in Lagos State except for employee commitment. Also, the study showed that all the independent variables (workload induced stress, pressure induced stress, target induced stress, and work family conflict) had significant effect on each of the dependent variables (service quality, sales turnover, and customer satisfaction) in selected deposit money banks in Ogun State except for employee commitment. This study recommended that management of deposit money banks should avoid situations where workers work for long hours, work under threats of queries and termination of appointments, and carry out spillover works at home which could lead to stress in the workplace and conflict in their homes.
