Security And Peace Building In North-Eastern Nigeria: A Study Of Gombe State Community Based Security Committee

Security is a universal entitlement and a core part of human well – being. Where there is no security, poverty and injustice may be prevalent. Reports and policy initiatives since the beginning of insurgent activities in the North East region have failed to build strong evidence to underpin these claims. This also affirmed the need to foster a concept of security which put people at its center. In response to this, Gombe State government set up a Community Based Security Committee in the height of terrorist activities and insecurity in the state. But from the time it was launched the committee went into slumber. It is as a result of this failure that the paper examines the activities of the committee to explain its inefficiency and lack of performance. The study used qualitative method and the data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The findings therefore, revealed that the take-off of the committee was not well-conceived, and members were not trained to effectively handle the assignment. The study recommends among others that training for committee members be organized, and all states of the region should adopt this measure as a proactive approach to security in their area.
