Ethics In Nigerian News Media: An Overview

Abstract

Ethics in journalism are the symbol of morals that journalists are supposed to uphold. It consists of a commitment to revealing the truth objectively, without being subjective to self-interest; whilst maintaining the privacy of sources and attributing what is said to the appropriate source. This paper focuses on examining journalism ethics in Nigerian news media; how Nigerian journalists report issues concerning different regions and whether Nigerian journalists abide by the code of ethics. It also examines how Nigerian journalists carry out their duties. Content analysis (C.A) is the form of methodology employed. The paper begins with an abstract; contains a brief introduction; looks at the background of Nigerian media structure and discusses ethical concepts as well as ethical theories. The paper figures out that Nigerian journalists, in one way or the other, violate the code of ethics of the profession. It recommends that journalists should abide strictly to the professional ethics.
