Abstract

There are growing problems of extreme rainfall in the world today, which has made many towns and cities vulnerable to flood events. In recent times, flooding has been a recurrent problem in most part of the world due to severe weather. In Nigeria, there are many flooding reports in some parts of the country during heavy downpour of rain which is threatening food supply. This study assessed the effect of flood incidence on agricultural production in Ifelodun local government area of Osun State, Nigeria. Descriptive statistics used in this study include mean, standard deviation, tables and charts. Questionaire administration method was used to obtain information on weather and food security from 102 respondents in the study area. The result shows that, rainfall has resulted in flooding in the area and this has led to the low yield of agricultural products. Lives and properties were in jeopardy due to negative effect of flood in the area. Rural people are often susceptible to the menace of climate change and living standard is drastically reduced compared to urban areas. It is therefore recommended that, rainfall forecast should be communicated to the farmers which will enable them to plan toward the coming rainy season.
