Abstract

The share of the manufacturing industry in overall GDP in Bangladesh ranged from 8.8 per cent in 1986 to 9.4 per cent in 1997 (UN 1999). Bangladesh compares unfavourably with the other nations of the region in terms of pace and level of industrial development. The share of the manufacturing industry in Thailand in overall GDP, for instance, was 22 per cent in 1980 which rose to 29 per cent in 1997. The growth in industriad production in Bangladesh has been very sluggish during the past two decades. A strong growth in the industry is, in most cases, accompanied by a growth in the forward and backward linkage industries concerned. Consequently, the value added gets expanded from the industries themselves as well as from the expanded linkages.
