Abstract

The Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies has long established itself as the principal agency engaged in applied economic research on the economy of Bangladesh. This report represents its first attempt to draw upon its considerable expertise to prepare an assessment of the current performance of the economy.1 It is not altogether clear whether this is the first of a series that will annually monitor the performance of the economy and thereby become a companion to the useful annual review of the economy that the Centre for Policy Dialogue has been carrying out for a number of years. Recently the scope of the annual CPD review of the economy has shrunk and its contents have become highly selective.2 The BIDS review therefore comes at a time when there is almost a felt need to supplement the CPD effort. Be that as it may, one hopes that the BIDS would make this review an annual feature of its activities. Undoubtedly it is better endowed with technical resources to carry out independent annual reviews of the state and performance of the economy than any other agency in Bangladesh.
